It’s Black History Month in the UK and we have some exciting initiatives planned in celebration! This is a time to honour the accomplishments and contributions of Black Brits, both in the past and present. We are also celebrating the wider Ethnic Minority community and allies who strive for racial equality.
During the month of October, Open Palm will be sharing a series of career insights from Black individuals of various walks of life. We'll also shine a light on those who have supported racial equality efforts and helped the Black community. We want to showcase the amazing achievements of our speakers and highlight just how much Black, Mixed Heritage and Ethnic Minority individuals continue to contribute to British society and the world today.
Career Insight Series
The insights series begins on 1st October as part of Project Enlighten where we celebrate diversity and inclusion. They will be shared on our YouTube and social channels. Our speakers come from all walks of life and sectors – from Construction, Education, Accountancy and Law to Social Enterprises and Media!
The career opportunities for young people today are endless. We're empowering the next generation to recognise that there’s no limit to what they can accomplish. Listen and learn from our speakers as they share their aspirations, career experiences and advice. We hope that young people will take that inspiration and know that you can achieve whatever you set your mind to.
Career Workshop
Along with this being our second Black History Month, it has also been one year since the launch of our course WYZ Money. Over 140 young people have completed our course on personal finance and we’re very proud of this accomplishment. To mark the occasion, we will be organising a career workshop during October half term in partnership with Investment 2020.
The workshop will celebrate diversity and inclusion within the Investment sector as our speakers share their career journeys. There will also be an opportunity for networking and learning further employability skills.
Work Experience
Through WYZ For Work, we were also able to organise an exciting number of work experience opportunities for students in Sports, Tech and Wealth Management sectors. Our course prepared young people to submit excellent applications and we're delighted to see our young people secure work experience interviews and placements!
Those hardworking students will be kicking off their work experience this October half term and we wish them the best of luck. This is an important step on their career journey, helps them to network and also supercharges their CVs!
Recognition for Open Palm's volunteers
We want to take this opportunity to also thank Ayesha, our wonderful Coordination Lead for Project Enlighten, for organising the exciting Career Insight Series and for all her hard work. Thanks to our amazing volunteer teams who have also supported to make this month's events possible.
