Open Palm teaches employability skills to Sixth Form students

Open Palm volunteer, Bolu, presenting at the workshop

On 23 November 2021, we delivered our WYZ® For Work employability workshop to a great group of Year 12 and 13 students at Bacons' College. 130 students participated in the workshop, which covered key employability skills such as interview techniques.

The group had varied career interests, ranging from Music, Therapy, Engineering, Medicine and Law and there were some aspiring Astronauts!

An interactive workshop preparing for career success

Our workshops are always interactive, with lots of opportunities for students to participate and ask questions. This workshop was no different! The group was enthusiastic and various students offered great responses.

The workshop activities enabled students to discover and apply some interview techniques. Some students had already entered the world of work, so were able to reference their own experiences too. For the majority of students, this was an introduction to the job-seeking process.

The skills taught in the workshop equip students to thrive in interviews, in the workplace and beyond.

We're delighted to have been able to work with this great group of students and look forward to continuing to support them in future.

What the students said...

Students participated in a poll immediately after the workshop. Over 80% of students felt more confident about job interviews after completing our workshop.

Huge thanks to the team at Bacons' College for having us and to the students for their participation!

Preparing young people for career success

Our mission is to deliver life-skills education to as many young people as possible, to prepare them for success. We aim to reach young people from Black, Mixed Heritage and Ethnic Minority backgrounds to address disparities in employment rates and leadership but our workshops and courses are open to all.

Our courses are delivered online, offer a nationally-recognised accreditation and young people can work at their own pace. Our courses are completely free of charge for young people.

If you are interested in accessing our WYZ courses for your child, students or youth groups, please enrol or get in touch at wyz@openpalm.org.uk for larger groups.
