Gaining real-world experience at Which?

3 young people

We had the pleasure of partnering with Which? the UK's consumer champion, to give a group of bright young individuals a transformative three-day work experience. This opportunity arose as a direct result of their participation in our Charity's Career Insight Day with Which? back in October 2023, an event aimed at inspiring and educating the next generation about the vast array of career paths available in their organisation.

From the outset, these young people were described by their mentors as being hungry, punctual, and ready to learn—a testament to their eagerness and determination to make the most out of this experience. Over the course of three days, they immersed themselves in a range of projects and teams , gaining invaluable hands-on experience that went far beyond the confines of traditional classroom learning.

The work experience program was meticulously designed to not only introduce these young individuals to the inner workings of a leading consumer advocacy organisation but also to empower them with practical skills and knowledge that would serve them well in their future endeavours.

Among the participants, one person stood out by choosing to review the new Apple Vision Pro, a cutting-edge piece of technology that has garnered significant attention in the tech world. This ambitious task required not only a keen eye for detail but also an ability to critically assess and articulate the product's features, usability, and overall value to consumers. Through this process, the participant gained a deeper understanding of the tech industry's standards and expectations, as well as the critical role of consumer advocacy in promoting transparency and accountability.

Another participant opted to explore the realm of money management tools and apps, a highly relevant and increasingly important area in today's digital age. By evaluating various platforms, this individual was able to develop a nuanced perspective on financial literacy, digital security, and the importance of user-friendly design in encouraging responsible money management among consumers.

“I found the Which? work experience very useful! It allowed me to meet new people and discover what Which? do in more content. I made really good friends and connections. Thank you Which? and Open Palm for hosting this Work Experience!” – Priyanka, participant.

Reflecting on the three-day work experience, the program offered much more than a simple introduction to the workplace. It provided these young people with a rare glimpse into the complexities and challenges of consumer advocacy, while also equipping them with valuable skills, knowledge, and confidence. The experience underscored the importance of curiosity, dedication, and a willingness to learn—qualities that are essential in any career path.

As we look to the future, our Charity remains committed to fostering opportunities that empower young people to explore their interests, develop their skills, and embark on fulfilling career journeys. The success of this collaboration with Which? serves as a powerful reminder of the impact that practical, real-world experiences can have on shaping the aspirations and trajectories of the next generation. It is our hope that the insights and experiences gained during these three days will inspire and motivate these young individuals as they continue to navigate their paths towards bright and promising futures.
